# 10. Manipulate dimensions
## 10.5. Methodology/Refinements/Sub-species
### 10.5.2. Fixing dimensions
An experienced manipulator will quickly recognise when a new dimension is being added to split his majority or deflate support for his particular issue and he will undoubtedly take steps to fix the parameters as he intends. He will endeavour to suspend the range of discussion and choice as they were originally arranged so that he can be sure of getting his own preferred decision.
A common method of specifying the dimensions is to first allow outside interference with the imposition of another dimension and then to intervene with some rapid stage management to separate off or neutralise the offending interloper.
In the example just mentioned concerning an overtime dispute, an astute union-leader would readily overcome the addition of a new dimension (i.e. productivity payments) and the management's attempts to split his majority. He would do this by firstly allowing management to offer productivity payments to the employees and then secondly suggesting to his members that their demands be extended to include productivity payments on overtime hours as well. Needless to say this would be unacceptable to the management as the "overtime dimension" would then be fixed, whilst the "productivity dimension" would be invalidated for use by the management because the new dimension would be now seen as an even higher cost outcome.
