Red Herring This is a form of diversionary tactic where completely irrelevant information is added to a discussion or decision making process in an attempt to derail debate or opposition by causing confusion on the issues involved. To distinguish from "diversionary tactics", a "Red Herring" is not about new issues, it's just new irrelevant data about the same issues. The concept of red herrings is also discussed later in the context of rhetorical manipulation.
