We tend to concentrate on the people or things that "survived" some process, whilst inadvertently overlooking those that didn't, because of their lack of visibility. A manipulator can use this trait to alter a victim's conclusions by only presenting information about the candidates that succeeded, whilst ignoring data about the ones that failed some selection process.
