# 52. Manipulation of Memory
## 52.5. Methodology/Refinements/Sub-species
### 52.5.9. Cryptomnesia
This is a form of misattribution where a memory is mistaken for imagination. It occurs when a forgotten memory returns without being recognised as an existing memory by the subject. The subject believes it is something new and original; he or she is experiencing a memory as if it were a new inspiration.
A manipulator can use this tendency to make a victim believe that they have just originated something new and wonderful, whereas they are just remembering something from their own past.
