# 52. Manipulation of Memory
## 52.5. Methodology/Refinements/Sub-species
### 52.5.20. Misattribution
Information is retained in the memory but the source of the memory may be forgotten. This is one of the "Seven Sins of Memory": Misattribution is divided into Source Confusion, Cryptomnesia and False Recall/False Recognition.
Manipulators frequently take advantage of this bias to attribute an action or statement to some person or organisation that wasn't actually responsible for it.
This is done either to attract blame or credit to that person or agency. It works fine until someone checks the facts and reveals the misattribution. But in the meantime it has done the manipulator's job of influencing his victims, and the misinformation generally "sticks".
