# 52. Manipulation of Memory ## 52.5. Methodology/Refinements/Sub-species ### 52.5.31. Telescoping effect This is the tendency to move recent events backwards in time whilst conversely fast-forwarding remote events forward in time. The result is recent events appear more remote whilst far off events seem more recent. In politics, a manipulator may wish to refer to historical events as being more recent than other more up-to-date events. For instance, a biased view of events in Israel's history would tend to focus on the Nazi atrocities and European pogroms against the Jews of 70 years ago, rather than on the war crimes by the state of Israel against Palestinian civilians committed in the last few months.
