# 27. Rhetorical manipulation
## 27.5. Methodology/Refinements/Sub-species
### 27.5.4. Content Manipulation
#### 27.5.4.12. Hidden co-option
This is another powerful hybrid of rhetorical manipulation. Here the manipulator relies on their knowledge of the victim's personality. The manipulator claims to share their perspective and demonstrates this by vocalising the victim's views and prejudices which are phrased as "mutual aspirations". The manipulator speaks in terms of "we" rather than "I".
The Japanese actually have a word for this process of "consensus-building". "Nemawashi" is a method used by Japanese executives to lay the groundwork amongst their employees for new initiatives. The word is borrowed from bonsai-tree cultivation meaning "binding of roots".
